Guwahati: Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi mounted a sharp rebuttal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, asserting that the CM failed to offer any concrete proof to back allegations linking him to Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati’s Rajiv Bhawan on Monday, Gaurav Gogoi said that the Chief Minister’s nearly two-and-a-half-hour-long media briefing held a day earlier produced no evidence to support such serious claims.
Gogoi said, “Yesterday, in the 2.5-hour-long press conference, the Chief Minister could not produce any evidence to prove that I am an agent of another country. He kept beating around the bush.”
He questioned why the SIT report, submitted on September 10, had remained pending for nearly six months before being placed before the Cabinet on February 7.
“The Assam Chief Minister had the SIT report for the last 6 months. Last year, he said he would release the SIT report to the public on September 10. If this concerns national security, our only question is: why was the CM silent on this report for the past 6 months? It is because the SIT constituted by him was unsuccessful in presenting any evidence,” Gogoi said.
“From the beginning, I have been saying that I will not go against the SIT investigation. I would like the SIT report released. CM is not Chanakya,” he added.

Clarifying his intent, Gogoi said the press conference was not merely a reaction to the Chief Minister’s remarks but an effort to address the people of Assam.
“I am not here to respond to the CM. I am here out of respect for the media and the people of Assam. I am in politics to raise issues concerning the people. Let them decide,” he said.
The Congress leader also strongly condemned what he described as personal attacks during the Chief Minister’s press conference, alleging that details about his children were revealed publicly.
Calling the allegations baseless and defamatory, Gogoi said the Supreme Court should take suo motu cognisance of the matter.
“Why are they spreading false information? This has crossed all limits,” he said.
The Congress leader further claimed that the Chief Minister’s extended press briefing was driven by the rising influence of the Congress in the state. He further claimed that the Congress possesses documentary evidence regarding the alleged 12,000 bighas of land and said details were being uploaded by the public on the ‘Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma’ website.
