GUWAHATI: A student of Class 10 got to experience bureaucratic responsibilities first hand when he temporarily assumed the position of the head of a district administration, on July 31. The student of Bakta Barbam Higher Secondary School, Bhagyadeep Rajgarh from Deoriting Tea Estate, assumed the role of Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sivasagar district for a day.
Bhagyadeep’s dream of stepping into the shoes of a district administrator became a reality, sparking enthusiasm and admiration across social media platforms. Congratulatory messages poured in, with many viewing the event as an inspirational moment for the youth. Some couldn’t help but draw parallels between this unique event and the iconic Bollywood film, Nayak. However, opinions varied, as some users highlighted the formalities required to hold such a position.
Hailing from the family of a tea garden worker, Bhagyadeep’s dream was realised through the Assam government’s innovative scheme called AAROHAN – a transformative program that identifies and nurtures exceptional talents among 8,750 students from Class 9 to Class 12. The selected students, attending government and provincialised schools, receive dedicated mentorship and guidance from chosen individuals.
Beyond the symbolic representation of Bhagyadeep as the DC, his honourary tenure is marked by a significant responsibility – conducting a comprehensive review of various ongoing government-run development programs. This historic moment signifies the first instance in Assam’s history where a student undertakes such a role, even if it is for a single day.
The AAROHAN initiative aims to elevate the quality of secondary education and recognise gifted students from remote, rural, and underprivileged families. Through dedicated mentoring and monitoring, the program empowers these students, offering support throughout their academic journey.
Bhagyadeep’s stint as the Deputy Commissioner showcases the government’s unwavering commitment to nurturing and empowering young talents in the state. This remarkable endeavour exemplifies the transformative impact of AAROHAN, fostering a brighter future for Assam’s promising youth.
