Guwahati: Violence erupted on Sunday during an anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act protest in Silchar, Assam, as demonstrators clashed with the police.
The protest, which was held without permission, took place in Berenga area, with hundreds of people blocking roads and raising slogans against the BJP government.
According to officials, the protesters, numbering between 300 and 400, resorted to stone-throwing when authorities attempted to clear the blockade.
In response, police used mild baton charges to disperse the crowd. The situation was brought under control after the area was cleared.
While a case has been registered, no arrests or detentions have been made.

Protesters waved black flags and demanded the repeal of the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated that there were intelligence reports warning of potential disturbances during the protests by the minority community.
Authorities took precautions to prevent violence, with the intelligence suggesting possible issues the day before.
