Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday revealed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has obtained a “definite angle” in the probe into singer Zubeen Garg’s death, following the receipt of the viscera report from the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL) in Delhi.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Sarma said the findings have given clarity to investigators and that the sequence of events surrounding the singer’s death will soon be presented before the court.
“The CID now has a definite direction in the case. Within a few days, the entire chronology of events will be placed before the court,” the Chief Minister stated.
The viscera sample was sent to Delhi after a second post-mortem was conducted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on September 23, following Garg’s return from Singapore.
CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed on Saturday that the report had been received and handed over to GMCH for preparation of the final autopsy.
The first post-mortem was carried out in Singapore shortly after Garg’s death on September 19.
The celebrated Assamese singer and cultural icon died while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he had travelled to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival.
Meanwhile, Sarma said that four more Assamese nationals from Singapore — who reportedly witnessed Garg’s final moments — are expected to reach Guwahati on Monday to record their statements with the CID.
The investigation has widened in recent days, with the CID summoning 10 members of the Assam Association Singapore who failed to appear before the deadline of October 6.
So far, only one, Rumkamal Kalita, has appeared and was interrogated for more than 24 hours.
Appealing to those yet to respond, the chief minister urged them to cooperate.
“Zubeen Garg was the identity and heartbeat of every Assamese. It is their moral and legal responsibility to come forward,” Sarma said, warning that legal measures would be taken if they continued to ignore summonses.
The probe is being led by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID, which, according to Sarma, is progressing “on expected lines.”
In connection with the case, several arrests have already been made — including the festival’s chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, two band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta, and the singer’s cousin, Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg.
Two of the singer’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, were also taken into custody on Friday after investigators traced financial transactions worth over Rs. 1.1 crore linked to their accounts.
All the arrested individuals remain in police custody as the CID continues to piece together the events leading to Zubeen Garg’s death.
