Guwahati: Assam Police successfully rescued a one-year-old girl who had been sold nearly 11 months ago by her step-grandfather.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the crime, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Mrinal Deka confirmed on Tuesday.
The mother of the child lodged a complaint with the Basistha Police Station on Monday, detailing the disturbing incident.
She alleged that her stepfather had taken the infant on May 30, 2024, under the pretense of seeking medical treatment while her husband was away.
Days later, she learned that her one-month-old daughter had been sold for Rs. 5,000.
Acting swiftly, the police registered a case and launched an investigation.
A special team traced the child to Sontali village in Kamrup district, where she was found safe.
“The child was rescued during the operation, and both the step-grandfather, who facilitated the sale, and the buyer were arrested from the village,” DCP Deka stated during a press briefing.
The mother, a resident of the Games Village area in Guwahati, expressed relief at being reunited with her daughter.
