Guwahati: The Centre has decided to set up a new urea plant in Namrup, Assam, with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore.

The commissioning of the Namrup urea plant in Namrup on the premises of Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Ltd (BVFCL) with a capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes per year was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget 2025-26

According to Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Department of Fertilisers, the project is expected to be completed in three and a half years.

He said the project is expected to generate approximately 1,950 jobs, both directly and indirectly.

Highlighting the importance of this project for the Northeast, Mishra said, “This is the most awaited project in the North East and it will take 3.5 years to build and will cost around Rs 10,000 crore.”

The new plant will produce 12.70 lakh tonnes of urea per annum to meet the fertilizer requirements of Northeast and Eastern India.

He pointed out that if the demand allows, the excess production will be exported to the neighbouring nations.

With the commissioning of the Namrup plant, India’s total urea production will reach 335 lakh tonnes, covering 75-80% of the country’s total consumption and reducing reliance on imports.

The plant will use local and imported natural gas for operations, and proposals are afoot to venture into the manufacture of nano and other high-tech fertilizer products.

Mishra stressed the importance of using fertilizers judiciously for enhanced agricultural sustainability.
