New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a ‘Most Wanted’ ponzi fund kingpin Mintu Das from New Delhi.
Sources said a case was registered against Mintu Das alias Rohit Chandra Das, proprietor of the Indian Institute of Banking & Information Technology (IIBIT), a Guwahati-based chit fund company.
An FIR was registered on September 4 this year at the Bhangagarh Police Station in Guwahati against Mintu Das and some of his close associates.
The complainant has reported to the police that that Mintu Das had promised them huge dividends against their deposits with the company in Guwahati.
The FIR was lodged with the Assam Police after it was reported after Mintu Das did not pay any dividend to the investors, and even did not return the money which they had invested with the company.
The FIR alleged that the victims had invested substantial amounts of money after being lured by advertisements placed by IIBIT in several newspapers in Assam.
Mintu Das had assured them that their investments would be placed in the stock market, promising substantial dividends.
However, after paying minimal dividends initially, he ceased payments and failed to return the deposited amounts.
Several deposits were received from investors across Assam and other Northeast India states, with no intention to deliver on the promised dividends or return the principal amounts.
The accused also threatened some of the complainants who sought legal remedies to recover their investments.
Mintu Das and his close associates have been absconding since January this year.
The case was registered under Sections 120B, 406, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 21(1), 21(2), 21(3), and 23 of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019.
Subsequently, on the request of the Assam Government, the CBI re-registered the case as RC-15/24, EO-III, on October 14 and initiated an extensive investigation.
CBI’s persistent efforts led to tracking Mintu Das through analysis of digital evidence and inputs from reliable sources which led to his arrest from a hideout in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.
Mintu Das is being taken to Assam on transit remand and would be produced before the competent court.
