Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire on a group of suspected cow smugglers in Mankachar’s Char Kukurmara area, along the India-Bangladesh border reports said. Reportedly, one person was injured in the incident.

As per official reports, the incident occurred around 4 AM on February 1, when BSF jawans noticed a group attempting to transport cattle illegally from Kukur Mara towards Bangladesh.

Despite repeated warnings and attempts by the BSF jawan to stop them, the smugglers allegedly tried to flee. This forced the personnel to open fire.

A cow smuggler identified as Shahar Ali (26), son of Hikmat Ali of Kukur Mara Part-II village under Mankachar police station, was sjot in the leg and sustained injuries to the leg. He is currently receiving treatment at Hatsingimari Civil Hospital.

Reportedly, other smugglers involved managed to escape taking advantage of the dark.

The BSF recovered two cattle along with smuggling tools, including cutting equipment and nylon ropes during the operation. Officials said the action followed standard protocols as part of ongoing anti-smuggling efforts along the porous Assam-Bangladesh border.

Security along the border has been tightened in the aftermath of the incident, while further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the smuggling network.

The incident once again underscores the persistent challenge of cattle smuggling along the porous India-Bangladesh border in lower Assam, despite increased vigilance by security forces.
