Assam authorities in Guwahati launched extensive security operations on Thursday following bomb threats targeting the city’s railway station and Gauhati University campus, police officials confirmed.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah stated that the Meghalaya Police Control Room in Shillong received a phone call warning of a possible bomb at Guwahati railway station.
“Acting on the information, we initiated investigations in collaboration with Meghalaya Police and conducted precautionary measures at the station. So far, no suspicious object has been found,” Barah said.
A comprehensive “search and sanitization operation” was carried out at the railway station by Guwahati Police, the Government Railway Police (GRP), and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Separately, Assam Police received an email suggesting that bombs might be planted at seven locations within the Gauhati University campus.
“The email did not explicitly state that bombs were planted but urged authorities to take precautions due to the possibility of an attack. Efforts are underway to trace the email’s origin,” Barah explained.
Security teams, including the university’s own personnel and Guwahati Police, combed the campus thoroughly but did not uncover any explosive devices.
When asked whether the threats were linked to insurgent groups such as ULFA(I), Commissioner Barah dismissed the likelihood of any involvement by banned outfits.
“Further investigations are ongoing to gather more details, but we cannot disclose additional information at this stage,” he said.
The incidents have raised concerns about security at critical infrastructure and public institutions, prompting heightened vigilance across the region.
