Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the BJP and its alliance partners will contest 103 of the state’s 126 assembly constituencies in the 2026 elections, expressing confidence that the ruling coalition is poised for a decisive victory.
Addressing reporters after the party’s state core committee meeting in Guwahati, Sarma asserted that the BJP will “comfortably win” the upcoming polls on the basis of its development agenda.
“There is no need to worry about the result,” he said, maintaining that recent electoral performances in Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi reflect the party’s continued strength.
“Considering the population pattern of the state, we can contest 103 seats, but that does not mean we will win all,” the Chief Minister clarified, adding that the party was making realistic assessments rather than “big plans or claims.”
Earlier in the day, the BJP released a statement confirming that it would enter the 2026 elections with its alliance partners and aim for victory in 103 constituencies.
Sarma said the party anticipates support from Assamese Muslims but does not expect votes from the “Miya” community—referring to Bengali-speaking Muslims. “If they give, it is well and good, though we do not hope for it,” he remarked.
He added that delamination has enabled the BJP to field more new candidates in 2026. “Earlier we could contest a maximum of 90 seats, but now we can give tickets to more youth and women,” he said.
According to Sarma, poll preparations have begun, and the party has decided to form 36 election sub-committees, which will be announced shortly. He further claimed that the party faces “no political challenges” in the state. “The BJP has members from all communities. If they had not supported us, the party could not have become such a big organisation,” he said.
The state core committee meeting was attended by BJP national general secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh, state president Dilip Saikia, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, national secretary and MP Kamakhya Tasa, state in-charge Harish Dwivedi, state general secretary (Organisation) Rabindra Raju and other senior leaders.
Before the meeting, Sarma also addressed the concluding session of the newly appointed coordinators and in-charges of all 126 constituencies and discussed strategies to publicise government schemes and achievements through party workers.
