Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has almost completed the selection of candidates for about 90 constituencies in the state ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing reporters after a late-night meeting at the party’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday, Sarma said the party’s internal consultations for most of the seats have already been concluded.
He also indicated that the BJP is expected to announce its first list of candidates sometime between March 10 and March 12.
The chief minister further said the party will soon begin discussions with its alliance partners to finalise seat-sharing arrangements for the remaining constituencies.
The BJP will hold talks with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) regarding the seats yet to be decided, he added.
As the election approaches, the BJP has stepped up its preparations and is working closely with its allies to plan a joint strategy for the ensuing polls.
The Congress party on Tuesday released its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2026. The list was finalized by the party’s Central Election Committee and released by AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma took a jibe at the Congress after the party released its first list of candidates for the state Assembly elections, calling it a reflection of “dynastic politics”.

He said that the Congress’s selection of candidates reflects a pattern of promoting political heirs rather than encouraging new entrants in politics.
He added that the list primarily has sons and relatives of prominent political leaders, be it the son of late chief minister Tarun Gogoi, the son of former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, or even the son of late chief minister Bhumidhar Barman.
