Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), have decided to contest the upcoming Assam Panchayat elections together.
This was confirmed following a meeting attended by leaders from both parties which was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Basistha, Guwahati on Sunday.
The meeting witnessed the presence of key political figures, including State BJP President Dilip Saikia, AGP President Atul Bora, Minister Keshab Mahanta, and senior leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury.
BJP State President Dilip Saikia underscored the historical significance of the BJP-AGP partnership, which has been in place since 2001.
Saikia assured that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP will remain united for both the Panchayat elections and the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam.
“We are ready to contest the Panchayat elections together for the service of the people.We are preparing for ‘Panchayat se Parliament tak’,” Saikia said.
Assam Minister and AGP President Atul Bora also affirmed that his party and the BJP will contest the Panchayat and Assembly elections together.
“Panchayat elections are just semi-finals for us. We will contest the Vidhan Sabha elections together too. Our alliance will continue to remain strong until 2026,” Bora said.
On March 25, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, the Panchayat and Rural Development Minister of Assam, declared that the panchayat elections of the state will be conducted in April.
He urged the Assam State Election Commission to announce the election dates as soon as possible.

Dass said, “Our government is ready for the Panchayat elections, and we request the Assam State Election Commission to announce the dates promptly. If the election dates are set for April 3, the election process will be completed by May 3. If the dates are announced on April 4, 5, or 6, the elections will conclude by May 4, 5, or 6.”
