Chirang (Assam): As part of the ‘12 Days of Development’ initiative spearheaded by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, a grand distribution ceremony was held on Tuesday at the Chirang District of Assam.
Bicycles, scooters, and cash prizes were awarded to students under the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award and Anundoram Borooah Awards 2024, aimed at recognising academic excellence and encouraging further education.
During the ceremony, a total of 370 students were recognised for their outstanding academic achievements through the Anundoram Borooah Merit Scholarship, receiving cash prizes as a mark of appreciation for their hard work and dedication.
To ease transportation challenges and ensure continued education, 5,938 bicycles were distributed to Class IX students under the Chief Minister’s Special Scheme.
This initiative specifically targets rural areas, aiming to facilitate easier access to schools for young learners and reduce dropout rates.
Additionally, 580 scooters were handed over to girl students who secured first division in the higher secondary exams and to boys who achieved 75% or above marks.
These scooters, distributed under the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award within the Pragyan Bharti Scheme, are intended to motivate students, ease daily commutes, and instill a sense of pride and independence.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma lauded the students’ achievements and encouraged teachers, parents, and the education system as a whole to continue supporting young learners.
He said the Assam Government’s unwavering commitment to student welfare and highlighted schemes like the Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan, which aim to foster self-reliance and empower local communities.
MLA Ajoy Kumar Ray expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu for their efforts in implementing such visionary initiatives.
He urged students to seize these opportunities to build a brighter and more promising future.
Reinforcing the importance of these initiatives, District Commissioner Jatin Bora described the schemes as pivotal for shaping the next generation of leaders and contributing to Assam’s overall development.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Sidli MLA Nirmal Kumar Brahma, BTC EM Dhananjay Basumatary, BTC EM Saikong Basumatary, MCLA Pradip Kumar Bayan, ADC Chirang Firdous Alam Sheikh, and Inspector of Schools Bijoy Baishnab.
