Guwahati: Former Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah has withdrawn his resignation following the intervention of party high command on Monday, reports said.
Speaking to media persons, Borah said that he sought more time from party high command to reconsider his resignation decision.
Senior Congress leaders, including AICC state-in-charge Jitendra Singh and APCC chief Gaurav Gogoi met Borah at his residence in Guwahati, after he sent his resignation to the party high command earlier in the day.
Jitendra Singh claimed that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has not accepted Borah’s resignation.
Jitendra Singh said, “I thank Bhupen Borah for taking back his resignation. Senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah is an important member of the Congress family. He had sent his resignation to our party’s national president. Sometimes there are differences of opinion within the Congress family. The Congress president has not accepted his resignation. The party leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, held a long discussion with him. We have resolved this through discussions.”

Meanwhile, Gaurav Gogoi said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke to Bhupen Borah and his resignation has not been accepted by party high command.
“Bhupen Kumar Borah is our asset. He is fighting against evil. We held discussions with Bhupen Kumar Borah for the last 3 hours. He is a strong Congress leader. If any wrong was done, as a brother, I apologise to him. Rahul Gandhi also spoke with Bhupen Kumar Borah,” Gaurav Gogoi said.
Adding to the political speculation, there were strong indications that Borah could formally join the BJP on February 20. Although no official confirmation has been issued, the timing of his resignation has fuelled discussions within Assam’s political circles.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Bhupen Borah’s decision to quit the party and added that he would visit Borah’s residence on February 17 to discuss his next political course of action.
