Barpeta (Assam):
The Barpeta District Administration marked World Environment Day with a series of initiatives focused on raising public awareness about environmental conservation and the dangers of plastic pollution.
The day’s observance began at Paanch Ali Chowk in Barpeta town, where senior district officials and members of the public gathered to witness a street play advocating against the irresponsible disposal of plastics, particularly in rivers.
The event was organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the Department of Forest and the District Administration.
Among the dignitaries present were District Commissioner (In-charge) Diganta Baishya, ACS; Additional District Commissioner Moushumi Chetia, ACS; Municipal Board Chairman Chabilal Das; and Cultural Officer Bidyut Bikash Das.
The featured performance, “Nodir Oxukh” (translated as “Ailment of the River”), portrayed the environmental degradation caused by plastic waste in water bodies.
Presented by a local troupe, the play combined dramatic storytelling with traditional music and dance, delivering a powerful message about the need for sustainable practices.
Speaking at the event, District Commissioner Baishya emphasized the urgency of addressing rising pollution levels and plastic usage.
“The government is implementing several measures to safeguard the environment, but public participation is crucial. This performance is a reminder that each of us has a role in preserving nature,” he said.
Municipal Board Chairman Chabilal Das offered a brief history of World Environment Day and underscored the need for ongoing commitment to eco-friendly habits.
“Environmental responsibility should not be limited to one day. Global warming and plastic pollution remain serious threats that require sustained attention,” he noted.
In line with state-led green initiatives, district officials planted saplings at Ashok Park in the town centre and distributed seedlings to residents, encouraging wider community involvement in environmental preservation.
Similar awareness and plantation drives were conducted across all Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in the district, reinforcing Barpeta’s commitment to sustainable development.
