GUWAHATI: In a bid to spread road safety awareness among school children, the government has joined hands with Young Indians (Yi) Guwahati Chapter for an innovative “Chota Cop” project.

The Lead Agency on Road Safety under the Assam Transport Department has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) sealing this collaboration on December 19 at the department’s office in Guwahati.

Initiated by Yi in 2018, the “Chota Cop” project is a unique learning and awareness programme designed to actively engage children in understanding and implementing basic road safety rules.

The programme employs an innovative report card format, equipping children with essential knowledge about road safety regulations.

It goes a step further by tagging them as the “Chota Cop of the House”, recognising and celebrating their role as ambassadors of road safety.

“This collaboration signifies our commitment to fostering a culture of road safety from a young age. The Chota Cop project aligns perfectly with our vision for responsible citizenship, where children play a pivotal role in shaping road safety norms,” Adil Khan, Secretary to the Transport Department, told the press after the signing.

Apart from Khan, the signing ceremony was also graced by Gaurav Upadhyay, Additional Secretary and head of the Lead Agency on Road Safety, Rahul Chandra Das, Managing Director of ASTC, and members of Yi, Guwahati Chapter.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Upadhyay told the press, “The Chota Cop project is a testament to our collective efforts towards creating a safer road environment. Empowering children as ambassadors of road safety will undoubtedly contribute to building a better tomorrow.”

The collaboration sets the foundation for a synergistic partnership, aiming to leverage the skills, knowledge, and assets of both organizations for mutual benefit.

“It’s a proud moment for Yi Guwahati chapter to be associated with the Govt. of Assam and to join hands to promote a road safety initiative among school students,” said Vinil Todi, Chair Road Safety Vertical, Yi Guwahati Chapter.
