GUWAHATI: Assam witnessed its most significant drug seizure to date as the Special Task Force (STF) Assam and Cachar Police intercepted a vehicle in Silchar, uncovering 21kg of heroin valued at Rs 210 crore.
One individual has been arrested in connection with the operation, signalling an intensified effort to dismantle drug trafficking networks across the Northeast.
Led by Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Inspector-General of Police (STF), and Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police of Cachar, the operation took place near the Sayeedpur area under Silchar police station in Cachar district on Thursday night.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number MZ-01-7204.
During the search, law enforcement officials uncovered more than 21 kg of heroin in its purest form, resulting in the arrest of an individual associated with the contraband.
Inspector-General Mahanta told the press that the significant value of the seized narcotics in the international market, highlighting the operation’s effectiveness in disrupting drug trafficking networks.
Applauding the prompt action of law enforcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the joint effort on social media, asserting the state’s unwavering commitment to combatting drug abuse.
“In a major step towards a drug-free Assam, 21 kg of heroin has been seized in Silchar in a joint operation by STF Assam and Cachar Police,” he affirmed, stressing the importance of ongoing investigations to disrupt drug supply networks.
Inspector-General Mahanta further revealed that intelligence received 10 days prior had indicated a substantial drug consignment would be transported from a neighbouring state to urban centres.
