New Delhi: Assam’s Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita has started campaigning for tea as the national drink of India.
Margherita, during Zero Hour of Rajya Sabha, on Monday said India’s every citizen start their day with a cup of tea, and the hot beverage deserves the right to get the national drink status.
“From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and from Gujarat to Northeast, tea is available in every household kitchen,” the BJP MP from Assam, said, adding tea is an integral part of everyone’s life in India.
As Assam tea will complete 200 years in 2023, Margherita said it is the right occasion to declare the green gold as the national drink of India.
“People of Assam will celebrate the occasion with enthusiasm. So, I request the Centre to extend its cooperation for the promotion of the tea industry of Assam,” he added.
The Rajya Sabha member said around 50 lakh people in northeast Indian states are directly or indirectly are associated with tea production.
Margherita also demanded for a special package for the overall development of the tea garden workers.
