GUWAHATI: The proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Marabhitha, Palasbari, may embark on its academic journey from a temporary campus before transitioning to the permanent site.

During a recent visit to the proposed location for the institute, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while outlining plans for the sprawling 574 bigha campus, hinted on such a possibility.

Drawing parallels to the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Guwahati, he said, “I would also like to request the Centre to begin the academic session of IIM Guwahati from a temporary campus; the way the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) had begun in Guwahati. And after two to three years, they can shift to the main campus.”

Chief Minister Sarma also affirmed his intention to raise the matter with the Education Ministry during his upcoming visit to New Delhi.

“With the establishment of an IIM, Assam will boast three prestigious pan-Indian educational institutes, alongside an IIT and AIIMS, completing the circle of excellent education in the state,” Chief Minister Sarma remarked.

The Chief Minister also assured a re-examination of the allocated land and pledged to address concerns raised by the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) regarding compliance with tribal belt and block regulations.

However, the proposal has sparked reactions from local organisations, particularly the Rabha Joint Forum (RJF), which represents the interests of the tribal community.

The RJF has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to set up the IIM in Marabhitha village, within the tribal belt and block area, alleging violations of tribal regulations.

During a press meet on Tuesday, they demanded proper consultation with the RHAC and accused local MLA Hemanga Thakuria of involvement in a conspiracy.

Similarly, the All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) Bholagaon-Borduar committee has voiced apprehensions about the state government’s handling of land negotiations, suggesting a potential link to demands related to the Sixth Schedule.

While not opposing the establishment of the IIM, they have threatened legal action if their demands are not considered and discussions are not initiated with Rabha organisations.
