Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Maharaja Prithu flyover, the state’s longest, in Guwahati on Tuesday.
The flyover connects Noonmati and Dighalipukhuri and passes through key locations like Ambari, Chandmari, and Bamunimaidam.
Constructed at a cost of over Rs 800 crore, this 5.4 km long flyover is aimed at easing traffic congestion in one of the busiest routes of the city and reducing travel time.
Authorities say the flyover will help streamline the movement of vehicles across these busy areas, which frequently experience long traffic snarls during peak hours.
The flyover has been jointly constructed by Gautam Construction Company Limited and Anupam Nirman Private Limited under the Public Works Department.
Construction work began towards the end of 2023 and was completed in roughly 28 months. The elevated structure is supported by 122 pillars, with the under-flyover space being utilised as parking areas to discourage parking of vehicles on the road.

The flyover has been named after Maharaja Prithu, an iconic ruler of ancient Kamarupa who is remembered for defeating the invading forces of Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1206 CE. Historical accounts suggest that he led a coalition of local tribes, including the Bodo and Koch Rajbongshi communities, to defeat the retreating army.
Earlier, the Assam government said naming the flyover after the ancient ruler is part of its “sacred duty” to preserve the state’s pride and heritage.
