GUWAHATI: The Assam Police have arrested the superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail in connection with a major security breach on the jail premises involving inmate and Waris Punjab De chief, Amritpal Singh.
Confirming the arrest of Nipen Das, the police informed that the superintendent has been booked under Section 13 (I) B of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Previously, the police had uncovered a major communication network operating within the jail, allegedly masterminded by the pro-Khalistan leader, Singh.
Following subsequent searches in the cells of the inmates, the police seized a cache of unauthorised devices, ranging from smartphones to spy-cam pens, raising concerns about the extent of illicit activities within the prison walls.

During a visit to the Central Jail on February 20, Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh announced installation of enhanced surveillance measures within the jail premises, following the seizure.
Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the full scope of the network and determine its sources of support.
Earlier, on February 17, reports emerged of a significant communication network purportedly orchestrated by Amritpal, who was apprehended in March 2023.
Amritpal stands accused of orchestrating unauthorised activities and maintaining ties with external elements.
Reports from Indian intelligence sources in local news outlets have linked him to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and his alleged involvement in arming a private militia known as Anandpur Khalsa Fauj (AKF).
Singh was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) by the Punjab Police on April 23 and was lodged at the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail.
