Guwahati: The late singer-actor Zubeen Garg was posthumously awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature degree by Cotton University on Tuesday.
Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya conferred the honour, which was received on behalf of the cultural icon by his sister, Dr. Palme Borthakur, during the university’s fourth convocation.
“It is an academic honour and the family is very proud of him,” Borthakur said, calling it an “emotional moment” to accept the award in his absence. She added that while Zubeen had helped everyone throughout his life, “in the last three months, we realised how people took advantage of him.”
Garg reportedly died in Singapore on September 19 while swimming in the sea. The government has constituted an SIT to investigate his death, and the charge sheet is scheduled to be filed on December 12.
The family hopes the report will be strong and that those responsible will be held accountable. “We just want he gets justice. We have faith in the investigation and will know the details of the charge sheet on December 12,” Borthakur said.
In August 2024, Garg personally received an honorary D.Litt from the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM).

At Tuesday’s convocation, the Governor also conferred an honorary D.Litt (Honoris Causa) on eminent Assamese writer and scholar Ranjit Kumar Dev Goswami for his contributions to literature and cultural studies.
