Barpeta: The 76th Republic Day was celebrated in Barpeta, Assam, with a grand event held at the Municipality Ground to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution on January 26, 1950.
Cabinet Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Nandita Garlosa, led the central ceremony, which was attended by key officials including the District Commissioner and Additional District Commissioners.
The celebration began with Garlosa paying homage to a statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Barpeta Municipal Board Office, accompanied by other dignitaries.
Following the tribute, the minister addressed a large gathering at the Municipality Playground, highlighting the Assam government’s ongoing initiatives for holistic development across the state.
Garlosa emphasised that these efforts align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
In her speech, Garlosa praised the achievements of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government, focusing on the significant progress made in Barpeta in improving governance and public services.
She also acknowledged the Barpeta district administration’s efforts in enhancing governance for the benefit of the people.
The Republic Day celebrations featured a parade with school students and performances from various departments showcasing important social and developmental themes.
Awards were given to top performers in the parade and tableau presentations.

The event also included cultural performances, with local artists staging street plays to raise awareness on various contemporary issues.
Later in the day, a friendly cricket match was played between the Barpeta District Commissioner’s XI and the Press Club of Barpeta XI at the Municipality Ground.
The 12-over match concluded with the Press Club XI securing a thrilling victory by 7 runs.
The day’s events underscored the district’s commitment to development, community engagement, and celebrating national unity on Republic Day.
