GUWAHATI: The Assamese feature film Jiya received a standing ovation during its premiere at Matrix Cinemas in Beltola, Guwahati, on Sunday, leaving the audience spellbound with its captivating subject and treatment.
Drawing a houseful audience, the premiere, coinciding with Mother’s Day, struck a chord with viewers, capturing the journey and struggles of a resilient single mother navigating contemporary society.
At the heart of the narrative is Jiya, portrayed by Sarmistha Chakravorty, who grapples with the challenges of escaping an abusive marriage while shouldering the responsibilities of single parenthood.
Jiya confronts the daunting task of fulfilling her daughter Nupur’s aspirations (played by Aradhya Mahanta), managing parental expectations, and battling societal judgment that perceives her as “available”.
Jiya has already clinched the Best Film Award at the Prag Cine Awards this year, along with three other accolades for Best Screenplay and Dialogue (Kenny Basumatary & Sarmistha Chakravorty), Best Singer Male (Angarag Papon Mahanta), and Best Background Score (Ambar Das).
Marking filmmaker Kenny Basumatary’s foray into drama, Jiya diverges from his acclaimed comedy and action films.
Basumatary expressed confidence in the film’s reception, stating, “We created a very beautiful film, and now we wait for May 17 when the cinema lovers will have their say. I am sure they will love the work put in by the whole cast and the crew.”
Written and produced by Chakravorty, Jiya delves into themes of friendship, particularly highlighting Pallavi (played by Eepsita Hazarika) as a steadfast friend and guide to Jiya.
Departing from a toxic job, Jiya finds solace in Pallavi’s workplace, where she encounters the courteous Abhi (Reeky Sharma), setting the stage for a unique turn of events.
“Jiya strives to underscore the resilience of contemporary women in facing life’s challenges head-on. Through Jiya’s portrayal, we aim to honour every woman’s unwavering strength and determination,” expressed Chakravorty, who serves as the film’s writer, producer, and actor.
Jiya is slated for a theatrical release on Friday, May 17, promising audiences an engaging cinematic experience.
