Guwahati: Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap has been arrested by Dispur Police following a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old polytechnic student, Samiul Haque.
According to reports, Kashyap was taken into custody on Tuesday night from a rehearsal venue at Rajdhani Theatre in North Guwahati and subsequently brought to All Women Police Station at Panbazar for questioning. She was formally arrested on Wednesday.
The arrest came a day after Samiul succumbed to severe injuries at Apollo Hospitals in the city on July 29, four days after being knocked down by Kashyap’s speeding vehicle in Guwahati’s Dakhingaon area.
As per reports, the Rajdhani Theatre group has officially terminated its contract with the Assamese actress after the death of Samiul Haque in a hit-and-run incident involving the actress. Kashyap was reportedly under a two-year contract with the theatre group.
Eyewitnesses claim that actor Kashyap, from the Assamese film Rudra, was driving her Bolero SUV at over 120 km/h. She allegedly rammed into Samiul, a worker helping a Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) team repair streetlights. Witnesses further allege that Kashyap, who they believe was under the influence of alcohol, fled the scene without stopping, and later assaulted a bystander who tried to record the confrontation when GMC workers traced her to an apartment complex in Kahilipara.
Public protests have erupted in response to the case, with civil society and student organizations demanding a swift and transparent investigation.
Samiul, who suffered severe head injuries and multiple fractures, was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital before being shifted to Apollo Hospital on July 28. Despite doctors’ efforts, he passed away the following evening.
