In a shocking case of moral policing, a woman in Assam’s Darrang district was ostracized and fined Rs 5,000 for wearing a salwar-kameez instead of traditional attire.
The incident occurred in Gongajani Kuwori village, located in the Sipajhar revenue circle area.
The woman, Meghali Das, who runs a small shop, has filed complaints with both the local police and civil administration, demanding action against the social discrimination she faced.
The authorities have announced plans to visit the village on Thursday to investigate the matter.
Das explained that she chose to wear a salwar-kameez for practical reasons, as it is more convenient for her daily work, especially when traveling to the market to buy commodities.
However, her choice of clothing was met with disapproval from some villagers, leading to a kangaroo court decision held at a local temple on Sunday.
“I was ostracised and told to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 for wearing salwar-kameez. My children have also been restricted from interacting with others in the village, and are prohibited from going to shops or even speaking to other children at school,” she told reporters in Mangaldai.
Despite the ostracism, Das remains determined to continue wearing salwar-kameez, asserting that it is a comfortable and practical choice for her daily activities.
