Guwahati: In a major anti-corruption operation, the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell (SVC) in Assam seized more than Rs 1.7 crore in cash along with a significant quantity of gold and diamond jewellery during raids at the residence of Circle Officer Nupur Bora and her associate, officials confirmed on Monday.

The searches, carried out across multiple locations in Guwahati and Barpeta, targeted Bora, who is currently posted in the Goroimari revenue circle of Kamrup district, and Lat Mandal Surajit Deka of Barpeta.

Vigilance teams discovered around Rs 1.7 crore in cash and jewellery from Bora’s apartment in Gotanagar, Maligaon.

The recovered currency is being tallied with the help of the State Bank of India.

Authorities also found nearly Rs 10 lakh in cash at Deka’s home in Dangarkuchi, Barpeta.

According to officials, both Bora and Deka had just returned to Guwahati late Sunday from Arunachal Pradesh when the raids were launched in the early hours of Monday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reacting to the development, alleged that Bora had been involved in large-scale land transfers while serving in Barpeta.

“This officer has been under vigilance watch for six months. Today, over Rs 1.7 crore was recovered from her residence. The government will take strict action against corrupt practices,” Sarma said.

Bora, who joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019, has earlier served in Barpeta and Karbi Anglong.

She has long faced accusations of irregularities, with allegations of her involvement in a multi-crore land scam during her Barpeta tenure.

After her transfer to Goroimari, fresh complaints of corruption reportedly emerged.

Officials added that Bora holds several bank lockers in Barpeta and Golaghat, which are now under investigation.

“The searches are still ongoing. The total extent of disproportionate assets will only be clear once the lockers are opened and examined,” a vigilance officer said.
