Guwahati: Assam University has decided to honour late music icon Zubeen Garg through a series of commemorative initiatives.
The university’s executive council, in its 176th meeting, resolved a special tribute that includes naming a major auditorium after the legendary singer and installing his statue on the premises.
The under-construction 500-seater auditorium, being built with state govt funds, will be named in memory of Zubeen Garg. Besides, the council also decided to erect a statue of the music icon in front of the completed auditorium.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant has written to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking additional funds to expedite the project, officials said.
The Assam University’s Diphu Campus will also dedicate its new conference hall to Garg as a tribute to his immense contribution to Assam’s music and culture, Registrar Dr Pradosh Kiran Nath added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch a campaign urging the fast-tracking of the investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg and promoting initiatives to preserve his legacy for posterity.
The Chief Minister said the ruling party will roll out a “positive” campaign titled ‘Moiu Zubeen, Amiu Zubeen’ (I am also Zubeen, We are also Zubeen) from October 23, aiming to honour the singer’s contributions and mobilise public support for timely justice.
The campaign will follow a 10-point agenda that includes erecting statues of Zubeen Garg and establishing two music schools in each Assembly constituency held by the BJP — one dedicated to Garg and the other to legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika.
As part of the initiative, all BJP members will also plant a ‘Nahor’ tree sapling, the singer’s favourite, Sarma said.
