Jorhat: In a unique empowerment initiative under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ programme, two girl students were given the rare opportunity to serve as the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Assam’s Jorhat district for a day on Saturday.
The honour was granted to Geetashree Sharma, a postgraduate student of CKB Commerce College, and Sanshita Baruah, a Class 9 student of Pragjyotika Senior Secondary School, Titabor.
Both girls won an essay competition titled “One Day as District Commissioner,” open to girls aged 14 to 25. Winners not only received prizes but were also invited to step into the shoes of top district officials for a day.
Jorhat DC Jay Shivani, under whose guidance the initiative was implemented, said the effort was aimed at fostering interest in governance among young girls.
“Geetashree and Sanshita showed keen curiosity, asked relevant questions, and engaged actively with the responsibilities handed to them,” Shivani said.
The two student administrators attended a video conference with the Chief Secretary and were briefed on the daily functions and duties of a DC’s office.

Calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Geetashree said she gained valuable insight into how policy decisions are made and executed.
Sanshita echoed similar sentiments, expressing pride in learning about Jorhat’s performance in various development indices.
The initiative was widely appreciated as an inspiring way to motivate young girls to dream big and explore leadership roles in public service.
