Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that over 10,000 dancers from the Bodo community will participate in a spectacular cultural event in December 2025—a mega Bagarumba performance.
Taking to social media, CM Sarma wrote, “Coming Soon: A Mega Bagarumba Performance This December, get ready to witness our Bodo community’s exquisite heritage dance form- Bagarumba in all its glory. Over 10,000 performers will converge in Guwahati for the performance.”
The Chief Minister has already chaired a preparatory meeting to begin groundwork for the mega event. “Chaired a meeting to set the ball rolling,” Sarma said.
This event, set to take place in Guwahati, is aimed at showcasing the rich cultural identity of the Bodo community.
Bagurumba is a graceful folk dance of Assam’s Bodo community. It’s often called the “Butterfly Dance” due to its rhythmic movements, which mimic the fluttering of butterflies and symbolize freedom and harmony with nature.
Bodo women participating in Bagurumba wear traditional attire, including the dokhna (a wrap-around skirt), jwmgra (a shawl), and aronai (a colorful scarf).
The dance is accompanied by traditional Bodo musical instruments, such as the Kham (a long drum), Sifung (a flute), Jota (made of iron), and Serja (a bowed instrument).
Bagurumba is deeply rooted in Bodo culture and is considered a signature dance of the community. It’s traditionally performed during the Bwisagu festival, a Bodo festival celebrated around the mid-April Vishuva Sankranti.
