Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ending child marriage in the state by 2026.
According to an official release, Assam’s strong legal measures and focused crackdown on child marriage have led to an impressive 81% decline in cases across 20 of the state’s 35 districts between 2021-22 and 2023-24.
The state’s efforts were widely praised at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Chief Ministers’ conclave held on Sunday, which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sarma said Assam’s determined and sustained campaign against child marriage received commendations from Union ministers, fellow chief ministers, and Prime Minister Modi himself.
The Prime Minister encouraged other NDA-ruled states to adopt Assam’s model to combat child marriage and suggested that officials visit Assam to observe the campaign’s success firsthand.
The conclave also served as a platform for chief ministers to present effective governance practices in areas such as water conservation, citizen grievance redressal, administrative innovation, education, women’s empowerment, and sports development.
