GUWAHATI: In a major push to strengthen the state of education in Assam, the government has announced a five-year plan on Sunday.
Targeting completion by 2028, the plan encompasses the construction of 4,000 “state-of-the-art” schools across Assam.
Claiming it to be the “biggest effort in state” to build schools, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while chairing a review meeting post a workshop on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode of contract, informed about the initiative.
“With the blessings of Hon’ble PM, Assam is undertaking the biggest ever effort to build schools in the state. 4,000 state-of-the-art schools will be constructed by 2028, i.e., adding 2 new schools every day for next 5 years. Chaired a meeting today to review the progress,” posted Chief Minister Sarma, on one of his social media handles.

The workshop, attended by registered contractors, empanelled architects and engineers of the PWD, was to review the construction work on 126 new secondary schools in the state through the EPC mode of contract.
Education minister Ranoj Pegu shared the dais with the Chief Minister at the meeting. Post the event, Minister Pegu informed that these 4,000 schools too would be constructed through EPC mode of contract.
“The EPC mode of contract has been adopted to expeditiously construct about 4000 secondary schools in phased manner,” he posted on a micro-blogging website.
In 2022, the state had made a similar announcement to revamp government-run schools in Assam. Last year on October 31, the government had announced that it will revamp 4,000 schools in the next 10 years to help them compete with best-managed private schools.
“We are trying to convert educational institutes of our State into centres for human resources development. All Govt schools will get new infrastructure. As a part of this, 10 schools in Guwahati will get new buildings in 1st phase, before 4,000 more schools are covered,” he had posted on a micro-blogging website.
