GUWAHATI: Assam Trinamool Congress President, Ripun Bora, has voiced dissatisfaction with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state, accusing them of violating the Model Code of Conduct that was enforced following the announcement of Lok Sabha Polls in the state.
In a formal letter addressed to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Bora highlighted the proliferation of hoardings and advertisements featuring the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the state, labelling it as a blatant infringement of the model code of conduct.
Bora’s letter stated, “This is to bring to your notice that the Model Code of Conduct has been in force since the evening of March 16, 2024. However, there are still a significant number of hoardings across the state of Assam displaying various advertisements of the government with photographs of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Assam, etc.”
In his plea to the ECI, the TMC leader urged for the immediate removal of hoardings bearing images of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Prime Minister, stressing on the necessity of adherence to electoral regulations.
The Model Code of Conduct was activated by the ECI subsequent to the announcement of Lok Sabha Poll dates on March 16.
Scheduled to be conducted in the initial three phases on April 19, 26, and May 7, the polls in Assam have garnered significant attention.
During a recent visit by a team from the Election Commission to Assam, the BJP-led government in the state had expressed its desire for the poll process to conclude before Rongali Bihu, marking the commencement of the Assamese new year.
