Guwahati: Six individuals were taken into custody in Assam on charges of sharing a video of cow slaughter on social media, according to authorities on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the Kamrup district, specifically in the Chhaygaon area, where the accused, six young men, had gone on a picnic just a few days ago.
During their outing, the group allegedly slaughtered a cow and filmed the entire process, which they later uploaded to Instagram.
After the video gained attention, a complaint was lodged with the local authorities, prompting the Hatigaon police station in Guwahati to file a formal case.
The six individuals were subsequently arrested in Chhaygaon, and they face charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as provisions of The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.

Legal proceedings have now been initiated against the accused.
While beef consumption is not prohibited in Assam, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, places strict restrictions on cattle slaughter and the sale of beef in specific areas.
Notably, the law forbids these practices in regions with a predominantly Hindu, Jain, or Sikh population, as well as within a five-kilometer radius of temples or satras, which are Vaishnavite monasteries.
These regulations aim to protect cultural and religious sentiments in areas with significant populations of these communities.
