GUWAHATI: A state-of-the-art X-Band Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) will be installed at the campus of Assam University in Silchar.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Assam University in connection with the installation of the Doppler Weather Radar.
The MoU was signed by Registrar of Assam University, PK Nath, and Scientist-G and Head of the Guwahati -based Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), KN Mohan.
X- XBand Doppler Weather Radar will help in research as well as improving weather forecasting, especially for Cachar and nearby regions.
The IMD is installing various types of meteorological instruments in northeastern states, including 11 Doppler Radars in the region.
Scientists of the RMC Sanjay O’Neill Shaw and SI Laskar, and Scientific Assistant (SA) from the IMD Rajnikant Nirala were present on the occasion.
Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, scientist-F, said that weather surveillance in the Cachar area will be more precise and weather forecast and warning accuracy will be enhanced with the installation of the DWR.
Under the agreement, IMD and Assam University, Silchar will do collaborative research, he said.
Assam University Vice Chancellor (VC) RM Pant, Director of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Piyush Kumar Pandey, Finance Officer Shubhadeep Dhar and Controller of Examinations Suprabir Roy were present on the occasion.
Director of College Development Council Jayant Bhatta, Dean of the School of Ecology and Environmental Science Parthankar Choudhury, and Atri Deshmukhya from the Department of Physics of Assam University were also present during the event.
