GUWAHATI: Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics & IT, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, has announced the imminent establishment of a Rs 25,000 crore semiconductor packaging plant in the state.

The revelation took centre stage during the inaugural session of the inaugural Future Skills Summit held in Guwahati on Thursday.

Addressing a diverse gathering comprising of thought leaders, industry experts, policymakers, educators, and technology enthusiasts, Union Minister Chandrasekhar signalled the milestone initiative as a pivotal step towards leveraging emerging technologies.

“Let me be the first one to announce that Assam will soon have a Rs 25,000 crore semiconductor plant as today, talks on semiconductors are extremely relevant,” he said.

The announcement comes on the heels of Tata Group’s plans to establish a semiconductor processing plant in Assam with an investment of approximately Rs 40,000 crore, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in December 2023.

Speaking at a function in Guwahati on December 9, Chief Minister Sarma had revealed that Tata Electronics Ltd had submitted a proposal for setting up an electronic centre at Jagiroad in Morigaon district.

“With an outlay of about Rs 40,000 crore, this initiative by Tata Electronics Ltd signifies a monumental leap forward for Assam’s burgeoning tech sector,” Chief Minister Sarma had declared, expressing optimism about the project’s potential to catalyse economic development and create employment opportunities in the region.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that the conglomerate has also approached the state government to train 1,000 people for employment in the unit.

“We used to always wonder why the electronics and IT industry did not come to our state. Now, that is changing,” Sarma remarked.

The Future Skills Summit, organised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) through the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), aims to chart a course for India to emerge as a global talent hub, capitalising on the opportunities presented by cutting-edge technologies.
