Guwahati: The traditional Bagurumba dance of the Bodo community is set to take centre-stage in Assam on Saturday, with more than 10,000 artistes expected to participate in a grand cultural performance in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The programme, titled ‘Bagurumba Dwhou 2026’, will be held at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium in the Sarusajai area of the city.

The event, aimed at showcasing the rich heritage of Bodo culture, will be one of the largest performances of the traditional dance form ever organised in the state.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in Assam on a two-day visit on Saturday evening. Ahead of the programme, he said the event celebrates the vibrant culture of the Bodo community and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling their aspirations.

In a post on X, Modi wrote, “At 6 PM tomorrow, 17th January, I will participate in the Bagurumba Dwhou 2026 programme in Guwahati. This programme celebrates the great Bodo culture. The NDA Government at the Centre and in Assam are working extensively to fulfil the vision of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma.”

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other dignitaries, will accompany Prime Minister Modi in witnessing the performance.

More than 10,000 artistes are set to take part in the event, including around 8,000 dancers representing 81 assembly constituencies across 23 districts of the state.

Bagurumba, a traditional folk dance of the Bodo community—one of Assam’s largest indigenous groups—is deeply inspired by nature and symbolises blooming flowers and the harmony between human life and the natural world.

Traditionally performed by women, with men providing musical accompaniment, the dance is characterised by graceful movements that imitate butterflies, birds, leaves and flowers.
