Guwahati: The principal of a government school in Assam’s Sonitpur district has been apprehended for allegedly sexually abusing a female student, police said on Saturday.
The Class 9 student alleged that the principal made lewd comments and touched her inappropriately during Saraswati Puja celebrations on January 23.
“The girl stayed confined at home with her mother, as she was afraid to attend school after the incident. Her family lodged a complaint at Missamari police station, following which the principal was arrested on Thursday,” a police officer said.
The accused, principal of Missamari Higher Secondary School, also serves as the president of the All Assam Higher Secondary Schools Principals’ Association, the officer added.
An investigation into the case is underway.
Police said that the school authorities have been instructed to provide full support to the student and her family during the investigation.
Meanwhile, schools in the district have been urged to strictly follow child protection protocols and report any misconduct immediately, emphasizing the need for a safe learning environment for all students.
