GUWAHATI: As a recognition to its dedicated efforts in the field of mental healthcare, Assam bagged the prestigious award for the best-performing state under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) in the Northeastern states category. The accolade was announced on Tuesday, coinciding with World Mental Health Day.
The award was presented to Assam during the National Mental Health Day Programme, held at the DRDO Auditorium in New Delhi, amidst a gathering of eminent healthcare professionals and dignitaries.
National Health Mission (NHM) Assam enthusiastically shared this remarkable achievement on its official micro-blogging platform handle, saying, “Assam has received the award for the best-performing State under the National Mental Health Program among NE States category on the National Mental Health Day Programme at DRDO Auditorium, New Delhi today.”
Congratulating the dedicated healthcare professionals for their pivotal role in this significant achievement, Assam’s Health Minister, Keshav Mahanta, stressed on the importance of compassion, dedication, and perseverance in instilling hope among individuals grappling with mental health challenges.
“Congratulations and Best wishes to all the Counsellors, Mental Health professionals and other members of the concerned department for achieving the award and working round the clock,” he wrote on the same micro-blogging website.
The NMHP, initiated by in 1982, was conceived with several key objectives, including availability and accessibility of minimum mental healthcare for all and focus on the vulnerable and underprivileged sections of the population.
Additionally, the programme encourages the application of mental health knowledge in general healthcare and social development, promoting community participation in mental health service development, and stimulates community-based self-help initiatives.
World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10, holds global significance as it raises awareness about mental health issues and mobilises efforts to support mental health initiatives worldwide.
