Guwahati: Assam Police personnel have brought home eight medals—five gold and three silver—from the ongoing World Police and Fire Games in Birmingham, USA.
The medals came through the wrist wrestling category, where four officers from the Assam Police clinched top honours.
Kandarapa Borah stood out by securing double gold in both right and left-hand bouts.
Amlanjit Borthakur added to the tally with a gold in the right-hand and a silver in the left-hand category.
Junmoni Das also bagged gold (right hand) and silver (left hand), while Lovita Koch earned a silver in right hand and a gold in the left-hand event.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media platform X to congratulate the athletes, calling it a “proud moment for Assam.”
“Four Assam Police wrist wrestling players clinched medals in the World Police and Fire Games, making the nation proud,” he wrote.
The World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) is a biennial, Olympic-style event that draws thousands of first responders from across the globe—including police officers, firefighters, and personnel from border protection, customs, and corrections.
Governed by the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), the WPFG is among the largest multi-sport events in the world.
India is currently ranked third in the overall medal tally with 373 medals, including 174 gold.
The United States leads with 811 medals (351 gold), followed by Brazil with 469 medals (164 gold). The 2025 edition of the games will conclude on Sunday.
