Guwahati: In a significant crackdown, the Assam Police‘s Special Task Force successfully busted a fake currency racket and apprehended two individuals involved in its production and circulation on Wednesday.
The police seized counterfeit Indian Currency Notes (FICN) worth Rs 6.87 lakh from the suspects, who were caught while attempting to distribute the fake notes in the Khanapara area.
Upon spotting the police, the suspects, Md Sahil Ali (21) from Kamrup district and Harsh Wahlang (20) from Ri-Bhoi district, fled towards Koinadhara in an attempt to evade arrest.
The Assam Police team chased the fleeing suspects and managed to intercept them at the Koinadhara-APSC Road.
During the arrest and subsequent search, the police seized Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) amounting to approximately Rs 3.7 lakh in denominations of Rs 500, along with a mobile phone and the Maruti A-star vehicle used in the operation.
Based on the confession of Md Sahil Ali, a further search was conducted at his residence in 9th Mile, Baridua, Ri-Bhoi.
The search resulted in the seizure of an additional Rs 3.17 lakh in counterfeit Rs 500 notes. Additionally, the authorities recovered a sophisticated FICN printing machine, along with a stash of blank white paper cut into the shape of Rs 500 notes, and other essential materials used in the production of fake currency.

Both suspects have been detained by Assam Police under relevant legal provisions. An investigation is underway to identify any potential accomplices involved in this illegal operation.
