GUWAHATI: In a stern message directed towards proscribed outfits operating from Myanmar and Bangladesh, the Assam Police has declared that it will eliminate all threats posed to the state within the purview of the law.
Addressing the press on December 22, Director General of Assam Police (DGP) GP Singh stressed the formidable strides made by the state law enforcement in reclaiming approximately 1.5 lakh bighas of encroached land from alleged illegal Bangladeshi migrants over the past two-and-a-half years.
This commendable effort, he feels, has triggered threats against the state police from banned outfits.
DGP Singh, without explicitly mentioning the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and recent threats directed at him by the outfit, highlighted that groups once based in Bangladesh are now issuing threats from camps in Myanmar.

“People threatening us from Myanmar once had camps in Bangladesh and caused havoc in the state. Moreover, as per our inputs, they still have relatives residing in the neighbouring country,” added DGP Singh.
In a clear and assertive tone, DGP Singh declared, “Whoever will try to thwart the progress and development of Assam, we’ll deal with them sternly within the purview of the law. I am a government employee, and the government’s agenda is very clear – Assam has to be peaceful. And, that is what the Assam police will do.”
The DGP called upon the people of Assam to make a choice between a grim situation reminiscent of the past or to support diligent policing, highlighting the critical role that the Assam Police plays in ensuring the state’s peace and development.

Touching upon Assam Police’s ongoing efforts against drugs and wildlife crimes, DGP Singh revealed that a significant portion of trafficked drugs and wildlife crimes originate from Myanmar and China.
“In the past couple of years, we have seized drugs worth 1500 crore in Assam. All these drugs have been trafficked from Myanmar. Even in rhino poaching, we have completely eradicated poaching, and our investigation suggests that the top countries involved in poaching are Myanmar and China,” he said.
