Guwahati: An FIR has been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by Assam Police at the Panbazar police station in Guwahati.

The complaint was lodged following accusations that he made derogatory and inflammatory remarks about Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The FIR, registered under Sections 152 and 197(d) of the BNSS, accuses Gandhi of making statements that could incite public unrest and disrupt the social harmony of the region.

The controversy erupted during Gandhi’s recent visit to Assam as part of his ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which aims to engage with people across the country.

At a public gathering, Gandhi allegedly made statements targeting Bhagwat’s position and views, which have been described in the FIR as provocative and capable of inflaming tensions within the community.

The remarks, according to the complaint, could potentially stir unrest among various groups, further exacerbating social divisions.

As per the legal provisions under which the FIR has been filed, authorities have cited concerns that such comments may lead to conflicts and disturb the peace.

The Assam Police, in response to the complaint, have already initiated legal proceedings and are now investigating the matter.

This incident is the second such legal challenge faced by Rahul Gandhi in Assam in connection with his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.’

Earlier, another FIR was lodged against him during the same yatra, accusing him of inciting violence with his speeches.

The latest FIR adds to the growing list of legal issues the Congress leader has encountered in recent months.

The legal proceedings surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s remarks have sparked political debate, with various factions weighing in on the implications of such statements for public order and political discourse in the region.
