GUWAHATI: In a significant operation, Dima Hasao police arrested four coal traders during a raid at Jogighopa in Assam’s Bongaigaon district. The arrests were made in connection with a GST case.
The arrested coal traders were identified as Azadul Hussain, Abdur Rahman, Mofidul Islam, and Abdul Motaleb. As per reports, the coal traders were involved in transporting coal from Umrangsu to Jogighopa for a long time.
Umrongsu police had arrested a businessman named Fazal Haque from Jogighopa in connection with the case for supplying fake GST invoices for coal to traders. Haque was apprehended about a month ago following a tip-off.
Earlier this month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an official of the GST commissionerate, Guwahati, on bribery charges.
The official was apprehended for “demanding and accepting undue advantage of Rs 50,000 from the complainant”.
The complainant had stated before the CBI that he was served demand and show-cause notices and that he was called several times to the CGST office by the accused.
The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting undue benefit of Rs. 50,000 from the complainant.
