Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on September 8 to take part in the birth centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.
During the centenary celebrations of the iconic singer, composer, and cultural icon of Assam, PM Modi will release a commemorative coin in honour of music legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
The event will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground in Guwahati from 5 PM.
In addition to the release of the commemorative coin, the Prime Minister will also unveil multilingual biographies of Bhupen Hazarika, celebrating his life and contributions to Indian music and culture.
The centenary program will feature a spectacular Grand Chorus, with 1,000 singers from colleges and senior musicians across Assam performing a 23-minute medley of Hazarika’s most famous songs.
The government has arranged for approximately 50 people from each district of Assam who were associated with Bhupen Hazarika to attend the event.
The chief minister said, “Those wishing to join the celebrations must apply on the official portal by August 20, after which invitations will be sent to their homes.”
The PM will arrive first at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat district and dedicate to the nation the bio-ethanol plant, set up at a cost of Rs 4,200 crore, CM Sarma said.

The PM will then travel to Mangaldoi in Darrang district, where he will inaugurate the Guwahati-Ring Road, a bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Kuruwa and Narengi in Guwahati, and also lay the foundation stone of the Mangaldoi Medical College Hospital.
