Guwahati: Authorities have announced repolling in 43 booths across five districts of Assam following irregularities during the first phase of the panchayat elections, held on Friday.
The repoll will take place on May 4, according to state election officials.
Of the 43 booths, 31 are in Hailakandi, eight in Sribhumi, two in Lakhimpur, and one each in Golaghat and Majuli.
The first phase of polling was conducted in 12,916 booths spread across 14 districts, where over 89.59 lakh voters were eligible to participate.
The voter turnout stood at 70.2%, with Majuli recording the highest turnout at 80.02%, and Sonitpur the lowest at 61%.
Polling began at 7:30 am and officially ended at 4:30 PM, though voting continued late into the night for those who had entered the booths before the deadline.
Minor incidents of violence were reported from Cachar district, but the rest of the polling remained largely peaceful.
The second phase of polling is set for May 7, and vote counting is scheduled for May 11.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA has already secured a strong lead, having won 325 out of 348 uncontested seats in the zila and anchalik parishads, as per the State Election Commission.
Panchayat elections are being conducted in 28 districts across Assam.
The remaining seven districts fall under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and are administered by autonomous councils.
