Guwahati: Assam Police on Thursday arrested AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam on sedition charges for allegedly making inflammatory remarks and defending Pakistan in connection with the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The arrest follows a directive from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who addressed the media at a press conference.
“We have reviewed a video in which the MLA appears to justify Pakistan’s role in the attack. I instructed the police to act, and the DGP has confirmed his arrest,” Sarma stated.
The MLA from Dhing will be presented before a court, and the government intends to pursue the matter to its “logical conclusion,” the chief minister added.
The controversy stems from a video clip of Islam’s statement that went viral on social media, prompting Assam Police to register a suo motu case.
The video, authorities said, contained content capable of inciting unrest and spreading misinformation.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Assam Police said: “On the basis of a misleading and instigating statement by Dhing MLA Sh Aminul Islam in public, which went viral and had potential to create an adverse situation, Nagaon PS Case 347/25 was registered for offences under Sections 152/196/197(1)/113(3)/352/353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He has been arrested accordingly.”

The arrest comes just days after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, most of them tourists.
The remarks by the opposition MLA have drawn sharp criticism across party lines, with many calling for strict legal action.
