Chirang (Assam): Assam Minister for Home (Prisons), Labour Welfare, and Adivasi Welfare, Rupesh Gowala, on Tuesday visited the newly constructed District Jail in Kajalgaon, Chirang, ahead of its official inauguration next month.
The visit was part of the state government’s broader push to modernise prison infrastructure and ensure more humane and rehabilitative correctional facilities.
The state-of-the-art facility, built at a cost of approximately Rs. 65 crore, is slated to be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 21, 2025.
With a capacity to accommodate 636 inmates, the complex includes separate sections for 557 regular inmates and a dedicated quarantine zone for 79 individuals — reflecting new health and safety standards post-pandemic.
During the inspection, Minister Gowala reviewed various aspects of the infrastructure including security installations, healthcare provisions, and inmate amenities.
He remarked that the facility is a significant step forward in Assam’s commitment to prison reforms that prioritise security, rehabilitation, and dignified treatment of inmates.
