GUWAHATI: President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday appointed governors for nine states including Assam and Meghalaya.
Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the current governor of Sikkim, has been appointed as the new governor of Assam, and has also been given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur.
Outgoing Assam governor Gulab Chand Kataria, who will be replacing Banwarilal Purohit as the governor of Punjab, assumed the role of Assam governor in February last year after serving as leader of the opposition in Rajasthan assembly.
Anusuiya Uikey, previously the governor of Chhattisgarh, was appointed as Manipur governor in February last year. Replacing Uikey with Acharya is a notable decision amid ongoing ethnic conflicts and unrest in Manipur.
CH Vijayashankar, a former Member of Parliament, will serve as the governor of Meghalaya. Vijayashankar has had a varied political career, having represented both BJP and Congress. He will replace Phagu Chauhan as Meghalaya governor.
BJP veterans Ramen Deka from Assam and Jishnu Dev Varma from Tripura have been appointed governors of Chhattisgarh and Telangana, respectively.
Ramen Deka, a former Lok Sabha member from Assam and BJP national secretary, has been appointed as the new governor of Chhattisgarh. He replaces Bishwabhushan Harichandan, who was appointed in February 2023. Deka, aged 70, has a long political career including two terms as MP.
Veteran BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur has been appointed as the new governor of Sikkim.
Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who was formerly in charge of Telangana, has been appointed as Maharashtra’s new governor.
Santosh Kumar Gangwar, a former Union Labour and Employment Minister, will succeed Radhakrishnan as Jharkhand’s governor.
Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde has been appointed as the new governor of Rajasthan.
