Guwahati: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwahati has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for setting up a module of a Pakistan-based terror outfit in Assam to carry out terrorist activities, the agency said on Wednesday.
Md Kamruj Zaman, also known as Kamaruddin, was convicted under multiple provisions of anti-terror laws and awarded three separate sentences, with the maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
The court ordered that all sentences would run concurrently.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Zaman for each of the three offences, along with an additional three months of simple imprisonment in case of default.
According to the NIA, Zaman had raised a module of the banned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen during 2017–18 with the objective of spreading fear and carrying out terrorist activities in the state.

The agency said the conspiracy was intended to strike terror among the general public.
Investigations revealed that Zaman had recruited several individuals, including Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam and Omar Faruk, to further the terror plot.
The NIA had filed a chargesheet against five accused in March 2019.
While Sahnawaz, Saidul and Omar were later convicted after pleading guilty, the fifth accused, Jaynal Uddin, died due to illness during the course of the trial, the agency said.
